Saint Nicholas Rotunda Church in Cieszyn, Romanesque rotunda church in Cieszyn, Poland
The Saint Nicholas Church features a cylindrical nave measuring 6.4 meters in diameter with a semicircular apse and limestone walls reaching 11.3 meters in height.
The rotunda rose between the eleventh and twelfth centuries as a castle chapel overlooking the Silesian borderlands. Until the mid-thirteenth century, it served as an administrative center for the regional lordship.
The interior walls display remnants of Gothic polychrome paintings from the 14th century, representing the architectural transformation periods of the structure.
An annual service takes place on the sixth of December in honor of the patron saint. Guided visits throughout the year reveal medieval wall paintings and the original stone vaulting inside.
Thousands of small limestone blocks form a geometric pattern across the vaulted ceiling, testament to medieval building crafts in the region. No other rotunda in Poland preserves a comparable vault from this early building period.
