Maurzyce Bridge, Steel bridge in Maurzyce, Poland
The Maurzyce Bridge is a steel structure spanning the Słudwia River with two main truss beams displaying a straight lower chord and a curved upper chord. The crossing stands about 4.3 meters high and creates a distinctive silhouette across the waterway.
The bridge was completed in 1929 as the first entirely welded road bridge in its class and only the second welded bridge worldwide at that time. This achievement marked a turning point in Polish engineering practices and influenced the development of construction standards.
The bridge represents a milestone in Polish engineering, leading the country to establish the first national regulations for welded bridge construction.
The bridge is located near Łowicz in Łódź Voivodeship and is accessible to pedestrians today. It was relocated to its current position in 1977 and remains open for crossing.
The welding technique used during construction significantly reduced both the weight and production costs compared to riveted structures of that era. This made the welding method an economical advantage for future bridge projects.
