Opactwo Cystersów w Byszewie, Cistercian monastery in Byszewo, Poland
Opactwo Cystersów w Byszewie is a monastery with a single-nave church built in the Renaissance style, enhanced by baroque and rococo interior finishes. The chapel features decorated side chapels and ornate details throughout its walls and ceilings.
The monastery was founded in 1250 when Nicholas Zbrozek, treasurer of the Kuyavian Duke Kazimierz, granted Byszewo and eight surrounding villages to the Cistercian order. This gift marked a turning point in the settlement of the region by the monks.
The church houses a 13th-century painting of the Virgin Mary with Child, crowned in 1966, making it one of the oldest Marian images in Poland.
The monastery is located in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian region and can be accessed by several routes that also connect other Cistercian sites in the area. Visitors should plan enough time to thoroughly explore the church and its interior features.
The interior holds painted funeral portraits and coats of arms on metal sheets from the 17th century that documented family and status. The silver-gilt robe of Mary is also preserved and stands out among the treasures inside.
