African Museum Olkusz

The African Museum Olkusz houses a collection of over 900 objects from West and Central Africa. The exhibition includes sculptures, weapons, musical instruments, jewelry, masks, and traditional garments from various African peoples.

The museum was founded in 1971 through donations from Dr. Bogdan Szczygieł and Bożena Szczygieł. It moved to the former hospital building on Szpitalna Street in 1984, where it remains today.

The collection features items from Tuareg, Dogon, Bambara, and Buszongo peoples, including ceremonial objects and items used in traditional rituals and everyday life. You can observe how these communities expressed their beliefs and values through craftsmanship and material culture.

The museum is housed in a historic hospital building and is open on select weekdays with limited hours. Plan to spend enough time exploring the collection and confirm the visiting schedule before your visit.

The museum holds paintings from the Democratic Republic of Congo created during the 1960s and 1970s, representing artistic movements of that era in Africa. These works offer insight into modern artistic expression that developed alongside the traditional craftsmanship on display.
