Muzeum Kanału "Dętka"

Muzeum Kanału "Dętka" is an underground rainwater storage system located beneath the city center that visitors can walk through. The corridor features red brick construction and has a curved ceiling with solid stone walls throughout its length.

A British engineer designed this rainwater storage system in 1926 to handle the expanding city's water needs. It became part of the infrastructure improvements that supported Łódź as an industrial center grew.

This underground space reflects how industrial cities solved water management challenges in their neighborhoods. Walking through it, you experience how urban life depended on hidden engineering systems that residents never saw.

Access requires joining a guided tour since visitors cannot enter alone, so plan your timing accordingly. The underground space stays cool and damp year-round, so bring a jacket and sturdy shoes for the walk through the narrow corridor.

The system could store 300 cubic meters of rainwater, a significant amount for a city in the early 1900s. This capacity reveals how seriously flooding was treated and how practical solutions were designed back then.
