The Henryk Sienkiewicz Literary Museum sits in a 16th-century townhouse on Old Market Square and displays the writer's personal items, manuscripts, photographs, and awards. The rooms also contain a large collection of his translated works and memorabilia from throughout his life.
The museum was founded in 1978 to preserve the writer's works and legacy after he won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1905. The building itself dates back centuries and stands among other historic houses surrounding the square.
The rooms display furniture and household items arranged as they would have been in a wealthy writer's home during the late 1800s. You can see how he actually lived through the objects on display.
Plan your visit for a weekday or Saturday morning, as the museum closes on Mondays. The rooms are quite compact, so you can view the entire collection in an hour or two.
The collection holds rare items including a death mask and a plaster cast of the author's hand. These intimate objects give visitors an unexpected glimpse into the personality of one of Poland's greatest writers.
