Naval Base Gdynia, Military port complex in Gdynia, Poland.
Naval Base Gdynia is an active military port on the Baltic coast in Gdynia, Poland, with dock facilities, dry docks, and workshops for maintaining warships. It serves as the main operational center of the Polish Navy and houses vessels, logistics facilities, and specialist staff.
The base was founded in 1922, shortly after Poland regained access to the Baltic Sea following World War I. Ships stationed here fought in several naval engagements during World War II before relocating to Allied ports, then returned to Poland after 1945.
The name Gdynia is closely tied to Polish sea power, and the base plays a visible role in shaping that identity. Walking along the waterfront, visitors can spot warships moored at the docks, giving this part of the city a clearly military character.
As an active military facility, the base is closed to the public and entry is not permitted. Some parts of the installation can be seen from outside along the nearby waterfront or from the Gdynia marina area.
Several Polish warships that operated from this base during World War II sailed under British command and fought in the Battle of the Atlantic. Some of those ships returned to Gdynia after the war and docked at the same piers from which they had departed in 1939.
