Nicolaus Copernicus monument in Wrocław

The Nikolaus Copernicus memorial is a bronze sculpture in the Old Town that combines abstract forms with realistic detail. The front of the chest features the heliocentric solar system that Copernicus revolutionized.

The monument was created in 1974 by artist Leon Podsiadly to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Copernicus's birth. The location was chosen to honor Copernicus's time working as a scholar and canon in the city.

The statue honors Copernicus, who worked as a canon and scholar at St. Cross Church in Wroclaw. His ties to the city make him a significant figure in Poland's cultural memory.

The monument stands in the northwestern section of the Old Town near the Piotr Skarga bridge that crosses the southern moat. The location is easy to reach on foot and serves as a good starting point for exploring the area.

The scientific symbols are carved directly into the human figure, so the body itself represents cosmic progress. This makes the memorial an unusual fusion of art and science.
