Gothic House, Neo-Gothic garden pavilion in Puławy, Poland
Gothic House is a Neo-Gothic garden pavilion in Puławy with tall vertical lines, ornamental details, and stones set into its walls reflecting medieval Gothic design. The structure stands as part of the larger palace and park complex, showcasing architectural features that echo older building traditions.
The structure was built between 1801 and 1809 under the design of architect Chrystian Piotr Aigner, replacing a Baroque pavilion destroyed by Russian troops in 1794. Its reconstruction marked the rebuilding of the collection at this location following wartime damage.
The building displays stones collected from historic sites across Italy, Spain, and Poland, which Izabela Czartoryska assembled to teach visitors about construction methods across different regions and periods.
The building sits within the Pałac Czartoryskich complex and welcomes visitors during regular opening hours throughout the year. Since it is an interior space, you can visit regardless of weather conditions.
In 1869, Russian authorities removed many artworks and collection pieces from the building, significantly altering what it originally displayed. This removal left gaps in what visitors encounter today when exploring the interior.
