Polinka, Aerial gondola lift in Wrocław, Poland
Polinka is an urban gondola lift in Wrocław, Poland, connecting two separate parts of the Wrocław University of Science and Technology across the Oder River. The cabins travel above the water and offer an open view of the river and the city on both sides.
Polinka opened in October 2013 as a direct response to the university's need to link facilities that had grown up on opposite sides of the Oder. Before it existed, students and staff had to cross the river using bridges, which took considerably more time.
Students ride Polinka every day to move between the two parts of their campus, so it feels like a normal part of university life rather than a tourist attraction. Visitors are welcome to join and often notice how relaxed and routine the crossing feels for the people around them.
The crossing takes only a few minutes, so no advance planning is needed before visiting. Going outside the morning and afternoon rush hours means fewer people on board and a calmer ride.
Polinka is one of the very few urban cable cars in Poland that functions as regular public transport rather than a leisure attraction. Riders who pay attention will notice that the two stations sit at slightly different heights, something that only becomes clear when stepping on or off the cabin.
