Kamienny Szaniec in Kołobrzeg

Kamienny Szaniec is a coastal sconce in Kołobrzeg with two earthen ramparts, casemates, and a moat protecting the northern and eastern sides. The fortification features brick construction and is distinguished by a stone wall facing the sea.

Built between 1832 and 1836, this fortification was designed to protect the Parsęta River mouth and the fortress's eastern boundaries from sea attacks. It represented a military response to the vulnerability of the coastal settlement.

The name refers to the stone walls that define the structure and set it apart from similar fortifications. Visitors can observe today how the thick walls demonstrate the way coastal cities protected their most vulnerable positions.

The sconce sits on the edge of the city and is straightforward to reach, especially when exploring the coastal area on foot. Access is open to visitors, though sturdy shoes are recommended as the terrain can be uneven in places.

The fortification received official recognition as a cultural heritage site in 1967 and appears on Poland's register of protected monuments. This early designation highlights its importance for understanding 19th century coastal defense strategies along the Baltic.
