Wyspa Sobieszewska, District and artificial island in Gdańsk, Poland.
Wyspa Sobieszewska is an artificial island in Gdańsk situated between the Gulf of Gdańsk and three branches of the Vistula River. Wide sandy beaches stretch for many kilometers and make it a popular destination for beach visitors and cyclists.
The island was created in 1895 when a canal was built to prevent flooding and transformed what was once a peninsula. This engineering project reshaped the geography and created a new landscape at the edge of Gdańsk.
Two bird sanctuaries here draw birdwatchers who come to observe thousands of migrating birds throughout the year. The island plays an important role as a resting place for species traveling across Europe.
Cycling paths crisscross the island and connect different parts of the sandy beaches together. Bring comfortable shoes since the paths are long and shade is limited in most areas.
Beneath the surface lie traces of Neolithic settlements, showing that people lived in this area long before the island was artificially created. These archaeological finds tell of a much older history of this landscape.
