Sanguszko Park in Tarnów, Historical park in Tarnów, Poland
Sanguszko Park is a green space surrounding Sanguszko Palace in Tarnów, Poland, covering gentle slopes planted with both native and introduced tree species such as tulip trees and plane trees. The grounds are divided into a formally arranged southern section and a more open northern area with meadows.
The park was laid out in the early 1800s by Prince Władysław Sanguszko as a landscape garden that originally included a pond and a canal in the northern section. Over time those water features were removed, but the overall layout of the grounds has remained largely unchanged since then.
The southern section of the park features a two-level Italian garden with a central fountain, laid out according to European design traditions of the 1800s. This formal area remains a popular gathering spot for people walking through the grounds today.
The park is open on foot throughout the year and has a network of paths that allow visitors to explore both the formal gardens and the more open northern slopes. In winter, those northern slopes are used for sledding and are popular with school groups from the area.
The park is home to the largest tree in Tarnów, a common plane tree growing on the northern side of the palace, with a trunk that has grown to a notably wide girth over the centuries. Visitors who look carefully around the grounds can also spot several old tree stumps, reminders of species planted in earlier centuries.
