Castro Verde

Castro Verde is an administrative division in Beja that covers rolling countryside typical of the Alentejo region. The area contains several settlements and is defined by its agricultural landscape and the presence of the Royal Basilica.

The town gained its first administrative status in 1510 and grew into a trading hub for the Baixo Alentejo region. This early recognition marked the beginning of its importance for local commerce and farming.

The Royal Basilica here displays ornate tile panels that tell stories of local traditions and showcase centuries of Portuguese craftsmanship. These decorated walls reflect how people in the region have expressed their beliefs and heritage through art.

Spring and autumn are the best times to visit, as summers in this region become quite hot. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended when exploring the scattered settlements and the Basilica.

The area is part of the European Union's Natura 2000 protection network and shelters rare steppe birds. This designation makes the region an important refuge for wildlife and birdwatchers.
