Belmonte

Belmonte is a town set on the eastern slopes of Serra da Estrela with views toward the Zezere River valley and surrounding countryside. It features museums dedicated to local topics such as discoveries and olive oil, along with a granite castle that invites exploration.

The town developed in the 13th century around a granite castle that later became the residence of the Cabral family following a royal grant from King Afonso V as recognition of their loyalty. This established the settlement as an important center of regional power and influence.

The Jewish Museum and restored synagogue document how Jewish communities maintained their traditions during the Inquisition period and continued their faith practices despite difficult circumstances.

The place is easy to explore on foot and welcomes visitors with its museums, castle, and local shops across several hours of visiting. Wear comfortable shoes as the streets are steep and the pavement can be uneven in places.

North of town stands the three-story tower of Centum Cellas, a Roman structure that served as a military outpost for the region's tin trade routes. This ancient building connects the modern settlement to its classical past and reveals how the area once held economic importance.
