Berlengas, Nature reserve near Peniche, Portugal.
The Berlengas Archipelago includes three groups of islands with granite cliffs, clear waters, and diverse marine life across 9,560 hectares of protected area.
The islands served as a strategic point for maritime navigation since the 16th century, when monks established a monastery to assist shipwreck survivors.
The São João Baptista Fort, constructed on the main island, represents Portuguese maritime defensive architecture and now functions as a shelter house.
Boats depart daily from Peniche harbor between May and October, with a maximum capacity of 350 visitors allowed on the islands at any time.
The archipelago contains endemic plant species like Armeria berlegensis and serves as a nesting ground for protected seabirds in the Atlantic Ocean.
