Serra da Malcata Natural Reserve, Nature reserve in Centro region, Portugal
The Serra da Malcata Natural Reserve spans 16,348 hectares of land between Penamacor and Sabugal, featuring diverse Mediterranean forests and temporary ponds.
The Portuguese government established this reserve in 1981 following a national campaign to protect the Iberian lynx and its natural environment.
Local communities around the reserve maintain traditional practices of cork harvesting from the cork oak trees that grow throughout the protected area.
The reserve remains open 24 hours daily, with its main office located in Penamacor and an environmental education center in Sabugal.
The reserve contains three confirmed nests of black vultures, which display wingspans reaching three meters and represent a critical endangered species in Portugal.
