National Museum Soares dos Reis, National art museum in Miragaia, Porto, Portugal
The National Museum Soares dos Reis is housed in the Carrancas Palace and displays Portuguese paintings, sculptures, and decorative objects from the 1800s and 1900s. The building features spacious galleries across multiple floors where works are organized by style and period.
The institution was established in 1833 by King Peter IV as the Museum Portuense, gathering artworks from convents and collections from a period of political change. It later expanded to showcase the breadth of Portuguese artistic expression across the following century.
The collections here reflect how Portuguese artists saw and represented their country during the 1800s and early 1900s. Walking through the rooms, you notice how the works speak to local pride and personal expression from that era.
The palace is located in central Porto and is easily reachable on foot, with stairs and elevators connecting the different floors. The visit flows well if you allow time for each floor and wear comfortable shoes.
The palace was hastily abandoned during the Napoleonic wars, leaving an incomplete banquet behind that was later discovered when the future Duke of Wellington arrived. This trace of sudden departure tells a story of upheaval frozen in time.

Porto is a city where history lives in its streets, with medieval walls, green gardens, and elegant buildings overlooking the Douro River. Visitors find museums, art galleries, and public squares where daily life unfolds. This collection includes places like Jardim das Virtudes, a quiet garden with tree-lined paths; Capela das Almas, known for its decorated blue tile facade; and Palácio da Bolsa, an impressive trading house from the 1800s. The city's gardens offer views of the river and peaceful spots to sit and watch the world go by. The neighborhoods near the Douro riverbank feature narrow streets, old homes with painted tiles, and active markets such as Mercado do Bolhão. Those interested in art will discover galleries and museums throughout the city, including Museu Nacional Soares dos Reis and Parque de Serralves. Each location in this collection shows a different side of Porto, from its past to how people live there today.
