The monastery features two cloisters, with the larger one positioned against the southern wall of the church and numerous architectural elements from different periods.
Construction of the Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Salzedas began in 1155 following land grants from Egas Moniz, and the monastery was consecrated in 1255.
The church interior contains paintings by master artist Vasco Fernandes and Bento Coelho da Silveira, displaying Portuguese religious art from different centuries.
The monastery opens Wednesday through Sunday from 9:30 AM to 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM, with closures on Mondays and Tuesday mornings.
The monastery complex extends along the Torno River, following Cistercian architectural principles that emphasized the importance of water source proximity.
