The Church of São Francisco features three naves with carved wooden panels covered in over 300 kilograms of gold dust throughout its interior surfaces.
The construction started in 1383 under King Ferdinand I's patronage, replacing a smaller church from 1244, and reached completion around 1425 with Gothic architecture.
The church contains the Tree of Jesse wooden sculpture by Filipe da Silva and António Gomes, depicting Jesus' genealogy through intricate carved figures.
The church opens daily from 9:00 to 20:00 between April and September, and from 9:00 to 19:00 between October and March, with entry tickets at 8 euros.
The catacombs beneath the church include an ossuary where thousands of human bones remain visible through a glass floor section.
