Ribeira Square

Ribeira Square is a historic plaza in the oldest district, surrounded by multi-story buildings that date back centuries. The paved space features multiple entrances and pathways that connect to the Douro River waterfront nearby.

The plaza began as a medieval marketplace where fish, bread, and meat were bought and sold for the riverside community. Early in the 1800s, the removal of the city's old walls reshaped this space and opened it toward the river.

The square is a central gathering place where locals and visitors mingle, shop, and rest throughout the day. The historic buildings surrounding the plaza reflect how this area has served as a social hub for centuries.

The plaza is easily accessible on foot and well connected by public transportation with several bus stops nearby. The space is open and free to walk through at any time without restrictions.

A monumental fountain from the 1700s sits in the northern section, adorned with the Portuguese coat of arms. This structure contains a modern statue that honors the city's patron saint.
