Alminhas da Ponte, Religious shrine in Ribeira, Portugal
The bronze relief sculpture stands on the wall near door number 20 alongside the arches of Ribeira, close to Dom Luis I Bridge.
Created in 1897 by José Joaquim Teixeira Lopes, this memorial commemorates thousands who drowned during the Bridge of Boats collapse on March 29, 1809.
Local residents maintain the tradition of placing candles and flowers beneath the sculpture to honor those who perished during the French invasion.
The monument holds both UNESCO World Heritage status and Municipal Interest Cultural Heritage designation, with wheelchair access available for visitors.
During Douro River floods, locals report hearing echoes of Orlando Beirão Valente, who died saving elderly citizens and children from drowning.
