Casa-Museu Guerra Junqueiro, Baroque manor museum in Cathedral Hill, Portugal.
Casa-Museu Guerra Junqueiro is a baroque manor house in central Porto that spreads across multiple floors. The building holds about 600 objects made of ceramics, metal, jewelry, sculptures, furniture, and textiles created between the 15th and 19th centuries.
The baroque building was constructed between 1730 and 1746 for a high-ranking cathedral official in Porto. After World War II, the house was donated to the city council and opened as a museum in 1942.
The house takes its name from poet Guerra Junqueiro, who assembled the collection and left his personal imprint on every room. The spaces reveal how an educated Portuguese of the 19th century lived and which art and craft objects he valued.
The entrance sits in a quiet street in old-town Porto, within walking distance of the Douro River. The building has tight staircases between floors, so it presents challenges for visitors with limited mobility.
The second floor holds a dedicated cabinet for drawings that regularly displays new works by contemporary artists. This space presents drawing as an independent art form and offers a modern counterpoint to the house's historical collection.
