Igreja de Santa Clara
Igreja de Santa Clara, Gothic church in Sé district, Porto, Portugal.
Igreja de Santa Clara is a Gothic church in Porto's Sé district whose walls and ceilings are entirely covered with gilded woodwork from the early 18th century. The decoration includes columns with Baroque carvings, Renaissance elements, and Corinthian capitals that create a rich visual experience.
Construction of this church began in 1416 for the Order of Poor Clares and was completed in 1457. The structure emerged during a period of architectural development that combined Gothic features with decorative additions that came later.
The interior bears the mark of the Poor Clares through lavish wooden carvings that ornament pillars and capitals with intricate details. This design reflects the devotion and prosperity the community enjoyed during its time.
The church is easily accessible on foot and located in a historic neighborhood that can be explored by walking. It is advisable to visit during morning or afternoon hours to enjoy the best light on the interior details.
Restoration work revealed hidden wooden paintings of saints and angels beneath the decorative layers. These discoveries offer a rare glimpse into earlier artistic layers of the church that had been concealed for a long time.
