Capela dos Alfaiates, Renaissance chapel in Sé district, Porto, Portugal.
Capela dos Alfaiates is a Renaissance chapel in Porto's Sé district with a square nave and large window on its front wall. The structure combines limestone construction with cross vaulting decorated with granite elements throughout the interior.
Construction began in 1554 next to Porto Cathedral under master builder Manuel Luís. The Tailors Brotherhood commissioned it as a votive chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora de Agosto.
The main altarpiece displays eight panels showing scenes from Mary's life, reflecting the religious rules set by the Council of Trent. These images held deep meaning for the Tailors Brotherhood as an expression of their faith and professional identity.
Access is through Largo de Entrada da Rua do Sol, and visiting times are restricted so planning ahead is important. The small interior means only a few visitors fit comfortably at once, making quieter hours preferable.
The ceiling vault blends late Gothic design with Renaissance elements, showing the transition between these two styles in 16th-century Porto. This mixture makes it a rare example of how architectural tastes were changing during that period.
