The Teatro Nacional de São Carlos features neoclassical architecture with five tiers of boxes and a performance hall that accommodates 1148 spectators.
The opera house opened in 1793 as a replacement for the Tejo Opera House, which had been destroyed by the 1755 Lisbon earthquake.
The theater maintains a resident opera company and hosts the Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa, established in 1993 as the venue's official orchestra.
Located at Rua Serpa Pinto 9 in Lisbon, the theater offers seasonal programs including opera performances, chamber music concerts, and symphonic presentations.
The building's elliptical main hall contains decorative works by Italian artist Giovanni Appianni and Portuguese painters Manuel da Costa and Cirilo Wolkmar Machado.
