Teatro Nacional de São Carlos

The Teatro Nacional de São Carlos is an opera house with neoclassical design, featuring multiple tiers of boxes throughout the interior and seating for around a thousand visitors. The main hall serves opera performances, chamber music concerts, and orchestral presentations throughout the season.

The opera house opened in 1793 as a replacement for an earlier theater that had been destroyed in the 1755 earthquake. This reconstruction showed Lisbon's commitment to restoring its cultural life after the disaster.

The venue is named after a Portuguese king and served as the heart of Lisbon's cultural scene for centuries. You can sense this importance as you watch performances and walk through spaces designed for the city's most celebrated artistic moments.
