Museu do Chiado, Art museum in Santa Maria Maior, Portugal

The National Museum of Contemporary Art contains Portuguese paintings and sculptures from 1850 to 1950, displayed across multiple exhibition halls and galleries.

The museum opened in 1911 as one of the first contemporary art museums worldwide and reopened in 1994 in the former Convent of São Francisco building.

The permanent collection features works from Portuguese artists including António Silva Porto, Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro, and José de Almada Negreiros.

The museum opens Tuesday through Sunday, offering guided tours and educational programs focused on art appreciation and historical context.

The museum building renovation was designed by French architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte, integrating medieval architecture with modern exhibition spaces.
