Elevador do Município, Public elevator in Baixa district, Portugal
The Elevador do Município connected Largo de São Julião with the elevated Chiado neighborhood through a steel construction and a 20-meter walkway.
The elevator, designed by engineer Raoul Mesnier de Ponsard, began operations on January 12, 1897, and ceased functioning in 1915 due to low usage.
The structure became associated with a failed attempt to overthrow the Portuguese monarchy during the January 28, 1908 uprising.
The elevator entrance was located at building number 13 in Largo de São Julião and could transport 25 passengers to a height of 29.6 meters.
After its dismantling in 1920, tram line 28 replaced the elevator's function in 1928, using the same route to connect the different levels.
