MUDE - Museu do Design e da Moda, Museum of design and fashion in Baixa, Portugal

MUDE is a design and fashion museum in Lisbon's central pedestrian zone, located inside a former bank building that was renovated for this purpose. The building spreads across eight floors and displays objects from the middle of the 1800s onward.

The museum first existed from 1999 to 2006 as a department of the Centro Cultural de Belém. After the former Banco Nacional Ultramarino headquarters on Rua Augusta was renovated, it reopened on 21 May 2008 with expanded exhibition space and fashion as a new focus.

The collection was bought by Lisbon City Council in 2002 and holds about 1,000 design pieces, from chairs and chests of drawers to works by Charlotte Perriand, Ettore Sottsass, Charles & Ray Eames and Le Corbusier. The fashion section adds around 1,200 haute couture pieces, from 19th-century costumes and handbags to designs by Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior, Vivienne Westwood, Paco Rabanne and John Galliano.

The museum is located in the pedestrian zone at the city center and is easy to reach from public transportation. Visitors should plan for at least two to three hours to walk through the exhibitions across the different floors.

The rooftop level includes a restaurant where visitors can see the castle and the city's triumphal arch while dining. This combination allows people to take a break from the galleries and enjoy views of Lisbon's landmarks.
