Zoo Lagos, Animal park in Barão de São João, Portugal
Zoo Lagos spreads across landscaped grounds with habitats that mirror natural environments for roughly 150 animal species, such as penguins and capuchin monkeys. The site is divided into different zones where visitors can spend several hours exploring.
Construction began in late 1997, and the facility opened on November 16, 2000 as a major wildlife site in the Lagos area. The project was created to establish a place for nature education and animal care in the Algarve region.
The facility plays a role in teaching families about animals and nature. Feeding times and educational activities help visitors understand how different creatures live and behave.
The site is accessible by car via the A22 motorway, taking the Sines exit and following signs toward the nearby Bensafrim area. Well-maintained pathways connect the different zones, making a full tour easy to navigate.
The site houses one of the largest groups of capuchin monkeys in captivity, with over 30 individuals living together in a dedicated enclosure. This unusually large family provides visitors with rare opportunities to watch complex social behavior among these primates.
