Praia da Alagoa, Beach in Altura, Portugal
Praia da Alagoa is a wide sandy beach on the Atlantic coast in the village of Altura, in the eastern Algarve, Portugal. It sits between low sand dunes and a strip of pine trees, with open sea views and a gently sloping shoreline.
Altura was a small fishing village until the mid-20th century, and the beach only came into use with the rise of tourism in the Algarve. Unlike other parts of the coast, development here remained modest, which kept the beach from being heavily built up.
The name "Alagoa" refers in Portuguese to a shallow pool or waterlogged area, pointing to the low-lying ground behind the beach. These pockets collect rainwater and seawater, forming small natural pools that draw wading birds, often visible from the path along the dunes.
The beach has lifeguards, showers, and sunshade rentals in summer, and access paths are clearly marked. Parking is close to the shore, and a seafront walkway connects to nearby restaurants and small shops.
The sea currents along this stretch of the Algarve coast tend to be weaker than those found further west, making the water shallower and more still. This draws families with young children, who tend to stay longer in the water here than on more exposed Atlantic beaches.
