Santo Isidro de Pegões

Santo Isidro de Pegões is a modernist church built with concrete and featuring a distinctive dual-pitched roof design. Large glass windows flood the interior with light, creating an open and airy worship space.

The church was inaugurated in 1957 as part of an agricultural colonization project on the Herdade de Pegões Velhos estate. It was developed under the direction of José Rovisco Pais and reflects the agricultural expansion of that era.

The interior displays a large mural fresco of Santo Isidro created by artist Severo Portela Júnior to honor the patron saint of farmers. The work fills a prominent wall and reflects the agricultural character of the community it serves.

The church sits at the center of the Pegões settlement and serves as a natural gathering point for the community. It is easily accessible on foot and functions as a landmark for orienting yourself in the area.

The building breaks with standard religious architecture conventions of the 1950s through its minimalist design approach. Rather than standing apart from the surrounding farming landscape, it integrates into the environment as a natural part of the settlement.
