Castle of Alvor

Castelo de Alvor is an archaeological site featuring medieval stone walls arranged in a quadrangular layout, with sections reaching heights of approximately 5 meters (16 feet). The ruins are built from limestone and red sandstone, creating a clear picture of the former defensive structure.

The site originated as an ancient fortification that passed through different hands over the centuries, including rule by Moorish forces. It later became an important stronghold during Portugal's medieval period.

The fortress shows characteristics of Islamic military design from the Moorish period in the Algarve. You can see how the defensive layout and building methods reflect the practices of those who lived here.

The site is straightforward to visit and the ruins are safe to explore on foot. The area offers limited shade, so it is better to visit during cooler parts of the day.

The fortress once hosted important figures of Portuguese history and served as a seat of power during medieval times. Walking through the ruins today, you can still sense the strategic importance it once held for the region.
