Castle of Alvor, Archaeological site in Alvor, Portugal.

The stone walls of the medieval fortress display a quadrangular layout with sections reaching heights of five meters, constructed using limestone and red sandstone.

The site originated as a Carthaginian fort in 436 BCE under commander Hannibal, who named it Portus Annibalis before its conquest by Moorish forces in 716.

The medieval castle structure reflects Islamic military architecture of the Algarve region through its defensive configuration and construction techniques.

The archaeological remains contain a children's playground within the main square, offering recreational space while preserving historical structures.

King John II of Portugal spent his final moments at this castle in October 1495 before his remains were transported to Silves Cathedral.
