Castle of Lamego

Castelo de Lamego is a fortification built on a hill near the town, featuring two concentric rings of defensive walls protecting a central stone tower. The structure commands views across four river valleys that shape the surrounding landscape.

Moorish forces built initial defenses on the hilltop during the 11th century, and Christian rulers reinforced the site two generations later with a massive stone keep. This transformation made the fortress one of the main defense points in the region during medieval times.

The castle preserves its medieval character through its thick stone walls and defensive passages that still define the hilltop. Visitors experience the weight of centuries when entering the courtyard, where this fortress once anchored regional authority.

Wear sturdy shoes when exploring the ruins, as pathways are uneven and stairs climb steeply throughout the site. An information center inside the keep shares the castle's history and helps orient visitors within the fortification.

Beneath the castle lies a Moorish vaulted cistern, a functioning water storage system that visitors can still discover today. This underground structure reveals the technical skills of medieval engineers who built it.
