Castle of Penas Róias, Medieval castle in Azinhoso, Portugal

Castelo de Penas Roias is a medieval fortification in Azinhoso featuring a distinctive quadrangular tower with an elevated entrance. The gateway sits several meters above ground level, reflecting defensive building practices of the period.

The Knights Templar established this fortification in 1166 under Gualdim Pais' direction as part of King Afonso I's border defense strategy. The castle served to secure and monitor the frontier region during the medieval period.

The castle reflects medieval military building methods used to protect border areas of the time. Visitors can observe how the structure was designed to control the surrounding landscape and movement through this region.

The site is accessible by car from several Portuguese towns, with parking near the entrance area. It is advisable to wear sturdy footwear as the terrain can be uneven and some sections may be difficult to navigate.

The castle entrance sits roughly 6 meters above ground level, creating an intentionally difficult-to-reach defensive position. This elevated access was deliberately designed to prevent unauthorized entry and control who could enter the structure.
