Serra do Bussaco, Mountain range in Baixo Vouga, Portugal.
Serra do Bussaco is a mountain range in northern Portugal covered with thick forests and rising to 549 meters at its highest point, Cruz Alta. The area contains a monastery complex and a grand palace hotel built in the late 1800s, both set within the protected forest.
The site became home to a Carmelite monastery in the 17th century, and in 1810 it was the scene of a major battle where Wellington's Anglo-Portuguese army defeated Napoleon's forces. This victory marked a turning point in the Peninsular War.
The monastery here drew Carmelite monks seeking solitude, and they shaped the landscape into a sacred space through centuries of care and prayer. Today visitors can still sense the spiritual intention in how the ancient forest is organized and maintained around the religious buildings.
Access is best from Coimbra via Route 110, with marked paths leading to different entry points around the range. Wear comfortable shoes since the terrain is forest-covered and partly hilly.
The Palace Hotel was built between 1888 and 1905 and blends elaborate architectural style with the forest setting in an unexpected way. The building stands apart as a monument to late-19th-century luxury amid the older monastery structures.
