Monastery of Santa Clara, Female monastery from the 14th century in Vila do Conde, Portugal.

The Monastery of Santa Clara is a Gothic structure positioned on elevated ground in Vila do Conde. It features thick defensive walls, a single-nave church layout, and contains one of Portugal's largest aqueducts within its grounds.

The monastery was founded in 1318 by Afonso Sanches, the illegitimate son of King Denis, and his wife Teresa Martins Telo. This establishment reflected the royal support for religious institutions during that period.

The monastery served as a women's community with its own rules for daily life and religious practice. The sisters shaped the spiritual and social life of the surrounding area for centuries.

The site requires climbing to reach it on the hilltop, so wear sturdy shoes for comfortable exploration. Plan enough time to see both the main buildings and the extensive aqueduct system on the grounds.

The church interior stands apart from other women's convents due to its sparse decoration and a distinctive rose window. This simplicity reflects a deliberate choice for prayer and contemplation rather than ornamental grandeur.
