The Santa Clara Aqueduct extends for 4 kilometers with 999 granite arches connecting the spring of Terroso to the Santa Clara Convent.
Construction began in 1626 under abbess Maria de Meneses to solve water supply issues, but technical difficulties delayed completion until 1714.
The aqueduct represents medieval engineering methods and stands as evidence of the Portuguese monastic communities' need for water infrastructure.
While sections of the structure remain accessible for viewing, several areas require restoration due to damage from storms and structural deterioration.
The structure ranks as Portugal's second-largest aqueduct system, featuring precisely measured arches that maintained water flow across varying elevation changes.
