Santa Clara Aqueduct

The Santa Clara Aqueduct is a medieval water system in Vila do Conde spanning approximately 4 kilometers with roughly 999 granite arches. The structure carries water from the Terroso spring to the Santa Clara Convent across varying terrain and elevation changes.

Construction began in 1626 under Abbess Maria de Meneses to address water shortages at the convent but faced technical challenges that delayed completion. The project was finally finished in 1714 after nearly a century of effort.

The structure shows how monastic communities solved their water needs and reveals the importance of reliable water supply for daily convent life.

Many sections of the structure can be viewed, though some areas show storm damage and need repair work. Good walking shoes and time for a longer stroll are recommended since the aqueduct extends over considerable distance.

The structure ranks as Portugal's second-largest aqueduct system, built with remarkable engineering precision. Each arch was carefully designed and positioned to maintain consistent water flow across the entire route.
