Litoral Norte Nature Reserve, Nature reserve along the northern coast near Porto, Portugal.
The Litoral Norte Nature Reserve is a protected coastal area in Esposende, in northern Portugal, running along a narrow strip of land between the Atlantic and several river mouths. It takes in dune fields, coastal vegetation, wetlands, and small fishing settlements, all contained within the same protected zone.
This coastal strip was used for fishing and farming for centuries before it received official protection in 1987. That decision came after growing concern over the loss of dunes and natural habitats due to construction and intensive land use.
The dunes and beaches along this stretch are used by local fishermen and walkers, often on the same narrow paths. The presence of small fishing villages within the protected area gives daily life here a rhythm that mixes working the sea with simply being near it.
The reserve can be explored on foot along several coastal paths, some of which pass through dune areas or follow the edges of river estuaries. Sturdy footwear is a good idea, as the ground shifts between sand, wet soil, and uneven terrain depending on the season.
The reserve is one of the few protected coastal areas in Portugal where people still live and work inside the boundaries. Walkers sometimes pass farmland or see fishing nets being repaired just a short distance from the shoreline.
