Gres a Dinosauriens Formation, Geological formation in Setubal, Portugal
Gres a Dinosauriens Formation is a geological layer along the Portuguese coast in the Setubal region, composed of mudstone, siltstone, and sandstone. These deposits form visible cliffs along the shoreline stretching between Rochadouro and Areia do Mastro.
This formation was created approximately 125 to 122 million years ago during the Early Cretaceous period in the Lusitanian Basin. Its name refers to the dinosaur remains discovered within these rock layers.
Scientists from around the world study this formation to understand the vertebrate paleoecology and ancient fauna that existed during the Early Cretaceous period.
You can observe the rock layers at the coastal cliffs and beaches in the Setubal region where the geological formations are exposed. The site is freely accessible from the shoreline.
Remains of several dinosaur species have been discovered in this formation, including Iberospinus natarioi and Suchosaurus girardi along with other ancient predators. These findings reveal the diverse animal life that inhabited this region during the Cretaceous period.
