Igreja Matriz de Lagoa, Medieval parish church in Lagoa, Portugal
Igreja Matriz de Lagoa is a parish church in Lagoa featuring a neoclassical facade built with local stone from the São Lourenço quarry and three front altars. The interior is organized around these altars, which serve as the focal point of the sacred space.
The church was originally built in the 16th century but underwent extensive reconstruction after the 1755 earthquake. Only the Manueline doorway from the original structure survived this period of destruction and rebuilding.
The main altar displays religious artifacts from the 17th through 19th centuries, including pieces from the Carmelite Convent of Saint Joseph. These objects reflect the spiritual history of the region and can be seen by visitors during their visit.
The church is located at Largo dos Combatentes da Grande Guerra in Lagoa and is accessible to visitors throughout the week. Regular services are held, so visiting hours may align with liturgical schedules.
A Baroque silver censer is still used in ceremonies today, and a wooden Rococo Christ Child figure is displayed during Christmas. These two objects connect religious practice with craftsmanship spanning different periods.
