Fort of Our Lady of the Incarnation

The Fort of Our Lady of the Incarnation sits on a cliff roughly 100 meters above the sea and was designed to watch ships passing along the coast. It has old stone walls, a small chapel inside, and views of the water visible from many directions.

The structure was built between 1670 and 1675 under Count Vale dos Reis to protect the southern coast from attack by sea. This era saw frequent naval conflicts, making such a fortress necessary.

The chapel inside carries a name linked to protection for seafarers traveling past this coast. Visitors can still see religious objects today that reflect how faith mattered to those who served in this place.

The site is open to visitors even though it lacks official protection status as cultural heritage. It is wise to wear comfortable shoes since the path to the cliff is uneven and wind can be strong.

The fort originally had a tall octagonal obelisk that helped sailors find their way along this difficult stretch of coast. This tower was so important for navigation that ships could spot it from far out on the water.
