The convent of Nossa Senhora do Carmo is a former monastery in Lagoa e Carvoeiro, Algarve, built in Renaissance style. The complex features a chapel with simple stone walls, symmetrical arches, and modest ornamentation, characteristic of the building methods from that period.
The convent was founded in 1550 and originally housed Carmelite monks dedicated to contemplative prayer and community life. It suffered severe damage in the 1755 earthquake, was partially restored by the Cabrita family, and gradually fell into decline afterward.
The convent is dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the patroness of the Carmelites. Annual festivals honoring this saint brought local people to the site for prayers and processions, making it a spiritual focal point for the surrounding communities.
The building is located about 1 kilometer east of central Lagoa near the Estrada Nacional 125, making it easy to find. Take time to walk around the simple arches and small courtyards, as the site is peaceful and good for exploring at your own pace.
The convent's archives were transferred to the National Archive in Lisbon during the 1800s and remain there today. This made the site an important historical source, even though the physical location itself lacks legal protection.
