Castro of Monte Mozinho

Castro de Monte Mozinho is a fortified settlement located on mountain terrain in Valpedre that spreads across a large area. The site is protected by three defensive wall lines that follow the natural slope of the land and surround different sections.

The settlement was founded in the first century AD and remained occupied until the fifth century, marking a transition period between Celtic and Roman rule. During these centuries, the place went through several phases of reshaping as different powers controlled the land.

The settlement displays round Celtic houses with courtyards alongside larger rectangular Roman buildings, showing how different cultures lived in the same place. These structures reveal how people adapted their building styles when living together on the same ground.

A visitor center with exhibits and found artifacts helps you understand the excavations. The best time to explore is on cooler days, since the mountaintop location is open to the elements and can be tiring in heat.

An eight-meter deep well from the fourth century still shows traces of its original wooden lifting mechanism. This artifact reveals how inhabitants brought water down from the mountain to their homes.
