The Cathedral of Vila Real is a Gothic house of worship with three naves divided by large pillars that rise toward the ceiling. High clerestory windows along the walls flood the interior with natural light.

Dominican friars from Guimaraes began construction in 1424, establishing an important religious center in the region. The building was elevated to cathedral status by Pope Pius XI in 1922.

The cathedral displays carved capitals with scenes from daily medieval life, showing priests, warriors, hunters, and people harvesting grapes. These carvings offer a window into how people lived centuries ago.

The building stands in the center of Vila Real and is easy to reach on foot. Visitors can attend services or take guided tours to learn about its architectural features.

The modern symphonic organ inside contains around 2,192 pipes spread across four keyboards. This makes it one of the most advanced instruments found in Portuguese cathedrals.
