Museu da Farmácia, Pharmaceutical history museum in Santa Catarina, Lisbon, Portugal
The Museu da Farmácia is a pharmaceutical museum in Lisbon displaying medical artifacts, medicine bottles, and pharmaceutical equipment from different cultures and time periods. The collection documents how medical practice evolved across centuries and various civilizations.
The museum was founded after receiving donations from Portuguese pharmacies beginning in 1981 and opened to the public in 1996. A second location was added in Porto in 2010, bringing the collection to another part of the country.
The museum displays recreated pharmacies from different time periods, including an 18th-century apothecary and a traditional Chinese pharmacy from Macau. These rooms let visitors see how pharmacists worked and what tools they used in their daily practice.
The museum is located in the Santa Catarina neighborhood and is easy to reach from central Lisbon. A visit typically takes one to two hours, making it easy to fit into a day of exploring the city alongside other attractions.
The collection includes space medicine items from the Space Shuttle Endeavour's final mission and supplies that were used aboard the Mir Orbital Station. These rare artifacts show how astronauts and cosmonauts received medical care in space.
