Verride Palace, 18th-century palace in Misericórdia, Portugal
The Verride Palácio de Santa Catarina is an 18th-century palace spanning seven floors with 19 rooms, overlooking the Tagus River and Lisbon's old district. The building has been carefully restored and now operates as a luxury hotel with amenities including a rooftop pool and winter garden.
The palace was built in the 18th century as the residence of the Count of Verride and remained under Caixa Geral de Depósitos management for decades. Lisbon's municipal council acquired the building in 2003 with initial plans to transform it into a design and fashion museum.
The palace hosted an urban culture exhibition during the 2010 Pop Up Festival, with traces of street art still visible on the upper floors. This artistic intervention marked the building as a venue for contemporary cultural expression.
Visitors can explore the building as hotel guests or through organized tours, as it is now a private property. The location in Misericórdia offers good connections to other Lisbon attractions, and the architecture can be admired from outside.
The building was initially planned to become a design and fashion museum but those plans were abandoned. Instead it evolved into a luxury hotel, preserving the historic structure while changing its intended purpose.
