Established on November 17, 1884, the institution moved to its current location in the 1960s after originally operating from premises on Rua dos Lusiadas.
The school received recognition as an Honorary Member of the Order of Public Instruction for its contributions to Portuguese technical education and design training.

The original building project from 1886 by architect Pedro de Ávila marked the first structure in Portugal specifically constructed for professional education.
