Igreja da Memória

The limestone church features a central dome and combines Baroque architecture with neoclassical elements throughout its symmetrical structure and detailed decorative patterns.

Construction of the church began in 1760 under architect Giovanni Carlo Galli da Bibbiena to commemorate King Joseph I's survival of an assassination attempt.

The church contains the final resting place of the Marquis of Pombal, a central figure in Portuguese history who transformed the nation's administration.

The Memory Church opens its doors to visitors under the management of the Patriarchate of Lisbon, which maintains the structure since 1948.

The structure stands as a rare example of Portuguese religious architecture specifically built to commemorate a failed assassination attempt against a monarch.
