Estádio da Luz, Football stadium in São Domingos de Benfica, Portugal
The Estádio da Luz is a football stadium in São Domingos de Benfica, Lisbon, Portugal, with a capacity of around 65,000 covered seats distributed across four tiers. The facility contains several hospitality areas and side sections with food and drink offerings, as well as spaces for media and guests.
The current structure opened in 2003 and replaced the earlier stadium from 1954 that stood on the same site. The new venue hosted several matches during the 2004 European Championship and the 2014 Champions League final.
The home ground of Sport Lisboa e Benfica is often called simply Luz, meaning light, taking its name from the surrounding neighborhood. Supporters of the club use red and white scarves, banners, and flags that wave from the stands and form a sea of color on match days.
The blue metro line stops right at the venue, and several bus routes connect the area with other parts of the city. Parking spaces are available around the complex, though longer waiting times should be expected during major events.
The outer facade features mosaic patterns that recall traditional Portuguese azulejos and give the structure a local identity. Inside, several areas display exhibits on club history that can be visited outside match days.
